Weapons (2025) Movie Review – A Promising Concept That Misses the Mark

The much-hyped Weapons (2025) promised a gripping supernatural thriller but ended up being one of the most overrated horror films of the year. Despite its talented cast and solid cinematography, the movie struggles to deliver a satisfying experience and falls short of its own expectations.

Directed by Zach Cregger, Weapons features Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, and Alden Ehrenreich in key roles. The film sets up an intriguing concept revolving around witchcraft, missing children, and a cursed tree, but never truly explores these ideas in depth.

The story jumps between characters without proper development, leaving audiences disconnected. While the visuals and tone give off an eerie vibe, the plot holes are hard to ignore. For example, the purpose behind the kidnapping of the children and the significance of the mysterious tree remain vague. If the witch devoured children’s lives to extend her own, why are none of them actually dead?

Performances from Julia Garner and Josh Brolin are decent, but even their talent can’t save a weak and inconsistent script. The affair subplot between Garner and Ehrenreich feels unnecessary — almost like a last-minute addition that doesn’t serve the story.

The parents’ reactions to their missing kids also feel unrealistic. Instead of organizing a proper search, they quickly point fingers at the teacher, played by Garner. The only character with genuine emotional depth is Josh Brolin’s, who begins to sense that something darker is at play.

Even the horror elements are underwhelming. There are no genuine scares, and several scenes — such as the aunt appearing in dreams or the floating gun over the mysterious house — feel random and lack logic.

While Weapons had all the ingredients for a chilling supernatural story, its uneven narrative, underdeveloped mythology, and missed emotional depth make it a disappointing watch.
