Nosferatu 2024: Beautiful to Look At, But a Bit of a Snooze

Robert Eggers' new "Nosferatu" is finally here, and it's a remake of the classic 1922 silent film, which, as you probably know, was inspired by Bram Stoker's "Dracula." This new version is absolutely gorgeous visually, but it's also really slow, which makes it a bit of a mixed bag.

Eggers clearly wanted to recreate the creepy vibe of the original 1922 movie, and he definitely succeeded in that. The film is visually stunning. The dark and shadowy atmosphere, the period costumes, and the spooky sets are all top-notch. If you're a fan of gothic horror visuals, you'll be in heaven.

The problem, though, is the pacing. The story moves at a snail's pace. While a slow burn can sometimes be effective, this movie takes it to an extreme. It feels like it takes forever for anything to happen, and there are stretches where it just gets boring.

One of the other issues is the relationship between Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) and Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård). Their connection is a crucial part of the story, but the movie doesn't explore it very well. It feels like something's missing, and their interactions lack the emotional depth they should have.

Bill Skarsgård is pretty good as Count Orlok. He's definitely creepy and unsettling. However, the mustache they gave him is... a choice. It makes him look a little silly, which kind of ruins the scary vibe, especially if you're familiar with the original Nosferatu's bald look.

Lily-Rose Depp's performance as Ellen Hutter is a bit of a letdown. She doesn't really bring the character to life. Ellen is supposed to be a complex and interesting character, but Depp's portrayal falls flat.

Willem Dafoe, thankfully, is fantastic. He's full of energy and brings some much-needed excitement to the movie whenever he's on screen.

Overall, "Nosferatu" 2024 is a beautiful film to look at, but it's also very slow and has some weaknesses in its storytelling. If you're mainly interested in the visuals and don't mind a slow story, it might be worth checking out. But if you're expecting a truly terrifying and engaging vampire movie, you might be disappointed.
