Devil's Double Next Level Review: More Parody Than Entertainment

DD Next Level, the fourth installment in the Dhilluku Dhuddu series, promised big laughs and scares but ended up falling flat. Compared to its predecessors, the film was a huge letdown with wasted potential. Despite a strong lineup of performers like Gautham Vasudev Menon (GVM), Selvaraghavan, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Redin Kingsley, the film couldn’t rise above weak writing and poor execution.

The biggest drawback was Kissa’s character, whose constant repetition of “Bro” not only felt forced but also killed the comedic flow. The concept of blending horror with parody had scope, where his storytelling appeared as on-screen titles that even the characters could hear — a smart parody move that blended horror with comedy in a unique way. The plot started off with promise on the cruise setting, creating curiosity and engagement, but once the story shifted to the island, the story felt underwhelming with its repetitive cannibalism and zombie gags, making it hard to sit through.

On the brighter side, GVM’s spoof of his own films, including the Uyirin Uyire sequence, provided some genuine laughs, along with Rajendran’s and Kingsley's impeccable timing lifted a few scenes. Selvaraghavan, though underutilized, performed well.

In the end, DD Next Level had a concept with promise, but the failed comedy timing, inconsistent screenplay, and lack of fresh ideas made it far less appealing than it could have been. Instead of delivering a memorable horror-comedy, it felt more like a stretched parody.
